Tutors note: Embedding Equality and Diversity

Last Friday’s Work Pairing (WP) course at Nacro included a presentation from Sam Latif.

Sam is employed by Procter & Gamble, she is responsible for Europe; Technology to get products from the factory to shop floor.

Not only does Sam hold down a responsible, high powered job, she is a married Mum of 3 young children, attends my gym and is Blind.

Sam brought in glasses, that simulate her eye condition, which the young people tried on.

She also brought in gloves that mimic arthritis and the students attempted to get sweets out of a packet, while wearing the gloves. (see pictures below)

The students were open mouthed when Sam explained that the University she attended initially said to her they could not accommodate blind people, she explained how she negotiated her place, creating a win/win, whereby she and the university would agree to part friends if it did not work out.

Sam also gave me a Disability Challenge exercise: Reading with Dyslexia.

When Sam left on Friday, the students wrote in their work books a list of everything they are GRATEFUL for in their own lives, when they read out their lists – having sight (which they previously took for granted) was at the top of everyone’s list.

This week Ruth Fogg who is the Managing Director of Stressworx is coming in to show them Emotional Freedom Techniques. (EFT) Ruth is deaf, and she is also the Vice Chair of the YMCA.

In addition, all the WP students are preparing a 10 minute presentation on what they learned from attending Skills London 2014. They attended this on 21/11/14.

One student learned how to sign his name in sign language.

I have been humbled by the generosity of my friends; kindly giving their time to the students at Nacro.
